One Little Fish: A Story of God’s Specific Provision

Listen to this post

I have a "whopper" of a fish story for you, but it probably isn’t the kind you’re expecting.

This story begins on the chilly shores of Stuart Lake in Canada. Back then, I was working hard to stay healthy, which meant my husband’s delicious family pancakes were strictly off-limits for me. Every morning at five o’clock, I knew I needed exactly two ounces of protein for my breakfast. With the eggs already spoken for, I decided to take a leap of faith and catch my own meal.

The local indigenous people told me that if I wanted Kokanee, I could find them. So, while my husband was in the kitchen, I’d grab my pole and head out to the dock. Every single morning, the Lord provided exactly one fish—a perfect two-ounce portion. That single Kokanee was God’s specific provision for me. Standing in the howling wind, searing my little fish in a pan, I felt so precious and so loved. It was a tiny detail, but it was a "Platform of Praise" for His faithfulness.

From Fish to Fisher of Men

Eventually, the Lord began to shift my heart. He wanted to take me from catching Kokanee to becoming a "fisher of men." To be honest, the idea petrified me. Even as an Inspirational Composer used to performing for crowds, the thought of talking to a stranger about the Gospel made me shake with fear.

I’ll never forget the day I was finally "pushed out of the nest" at a local mall. My mentor pointed to a man sitting alone and said, "This is it." As I walked up, trembling, I remembered my pastor’s words: "It’s not about you. It’s the Holy Spirit working through you."

As we talked, the man began to tear up. When he prayed to accept Christ, I cried right along with him! I watched his entire face transform. Later that day, I spoke to three teenage boys and a woman who felt she was "too bad" for God’s grace. Seeing the joy and freedom wash over them as they realized they were forgiven was the greatest thrill of my life.

Whether it was that one little fish on a quiet Canadian dock or a lost soul on a busy city street, God’s faithfulness remains the same. He gives us exactly what we need, exactly when we need it, as we follow His Steps To Joy.

Reflection: Is there a "small" need in your life today that you haven't yet surrendered to God? Trust that He cares about the tiny details of your provision just as much as the big moments of your purpose.
